This podcast is in response to the following question from our private Facebook Group:

“Do you think there’s a general way to clear anxiety that’s applicable for everyone, or do you think everyone is different, and there’s different ways that work for other people?”

Notes from this week’s episode:

There are a variety of practices that can calm anxiety for everyone, but the experience of anxiety is not the same for everyone. Learning about our mind and body type gives us individual insights into our triggers and challenges with anxiety and a variety of ways we can support ourselves with life adjustments, emotional support and diet.

Insights from Ayurveda on anxiety and different mind/body types.

Anxiety is almost epidemic in the modern higher tech world, though it is a long standing human problem. It is increasing globally during this coronavirus pandemic.

Anxiety is seen as Vata Dosha disorder in Ayurvedic medicine, a problem that arises from an excess of the air and space elements and lack of earth, water and fire, not just in the body but also in the mind. Anxiety more commonly strikes Vata dosha types or those in whom Vata dosha is increased either at physical and psychological levels.

We experience different types of anxiety according to our mind type

Anxiety can vary for each of us different depending on our dosha.

Vata - scattered, rush from one incomplete task or action to another, forgetful, may skip meals, turn up late, become increasingly inattentive and scattered.

Pitta - feels the need to complete many tasks, must get things done, driven to be efficient, may even be competitive about it. Will turn in themselves if they feel they are not achieving enough and quickly enough. Frustration, impatience with self and others. Perfectionism.

Kapha - Inertia, fearful, low energy, comfort eating etc. Tendency more toward depression vs. anxiety.

Rather than seeing anxiety as a set condition or disorder, Ayurveda invites us to look more deeply into our individual makeup. Our challenges and emotional experiences can't be measured or boxed - we are unique individuals and we work differently and think differently to each other. Ayurveda celebrates our unique nature and teaches us how to understand and support ourselves.
